Parks and Playgrounds

There are free neighborhood parks throughout the county, as well as larger destinations with special amenities or fees. County travel times vary, so check the address and route that work for your family.

Saluda Shoals Park

Irmo area · 5605 Bush River Road

Leo’s Landing inclusive playground, about 10 miles of paved and natural-surface trails, a river observation deck and a low ropes course. The 480-acre park charges $7 per car or minivan for daily admission. Saluda Splash has separate seasonal admission: in 2026, $4 per person or $55 for a 15-visit pass.

Virginia Hylton Park

Lexington · 111 Maiden Lane

Playgrounds, walking paths, shelters, restrooms and a seasonal splash pad. Park admission is free; the Town listed the 2026 splash pad season as May 1 through September 30.

Corley Street Park

Lexington · 210 Corley Street

A playground, swings, slides, musical play equipment, restrooms and a seasonal splash pad. Free park admission.

Willie B. Caractor Park

Lexington · 804 Hendrix Street

Swings, a rope climber, hopscotch, restrooms and a seasonal splash pad. Free park admission.

Gibson Pond Park

Lexington · 241 Gibson Pond Road

A half-mile trail, fishing, playground swings and picnic shelters. Check current South Carolina fishing-license requirements before casting a line. Free park admission.

Fourteen Mile Creek Trail

Lexington

A wide, roughly 1.7-mile round-trip route with bridges, seating and an outdoor classroom. Check the Town page for access information.

Cayce and West Columbia Riverwalk

Along the Congaree River

Connected paved trail and boardwalk sections, river views and places to stop along the way. The cities describe different route lengths depending on the section, so use the map to plan your outing. Free access.

Peachtree Rock Heritage Preserve

Near Red Bank and Swansea

Sandstone formations, trails and a small waterfall make this a nature outing for families with older children. Trails are uneven and not stroller-friendly. The preserve asks visitors not to climb on the rock formations.

Splash Pads and Lake Days

South Carolina summers are hot, so it helps to know which water spots are nearby. The Town of Lexington lists splash pads at Corley Street, Virginia Hylton and Willie B. Caractor parks. Other family options include Felton C. Benton Park in Springdale, Melvin Park Splash in Chapin, Saluda Splash at Saluda Shoals and Waterfall Junction at Riverbanks Zoo. Each has its own season, admission rules and hours; Waterfall Junction is included with zoo admission.

For the ICRC splash areas at Saluda Shoals and Melvin Park, 2026 season dates were April 25 through September 13. The 2026 Town of Lexington splash pad season ran May 1 through September 30. These dates have passed; check each operator for next season’s schedule before planning a visit.

Lake Murray public beach: The 2026 season at the public recreation area on the Lexington side of the dam ran April 1 through September 7. Dominion Energy listed day passes at $5 per vehicle, with online reservations opening up to three weeks ahead. The area has no lifeguards. Lexington County Public Library lists 10 branches and a mobile library. Children’s storytimes, seasonal reading programs and other events are available at different branches; check the library’s programs page for current schedules.

Worth a Short Drive

Families can also find museums, wildlife, theater and outdoor destinations in the greater Columbia area. Actual drive times vary by starting point and traffic.

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden

The zoo entrance is in Columbia; the Botanical Garden entrance is in West Columbia. Riverbanks reports more than 3,000 animals. Waterfall Junction is a seasonal splash-play area included with general zoo admission.

EdVenture Children’s Museum

A hands-on children’s museum in Columbia, home to EDDIE, a 40-foot, three-story child exhibit visitors can explore.

South Carolina State Museum

Four floors of exhibits, plus a planetarium, observatory and 4D theater. Check the museum’s current notice for any gallery closures or exhibit changes.

Congaree National Park

Free park entry and an elevated 2.6-mile round-trip Boardwalk Loop through bottomland forest. The boardwalk is stroller- and wheelchair-accessible; check alerts for flooding or trail closures.

Soda City Market

A Saturday street market on Main Street in Columbia, listed by organizers as 9 a.m.–1 p.m. year-round, rain or shine. Confirm event details before you go.

Children’s theater

Columbia Children’s Theatre and Columbia Marionette Theatre offer shows on seasonal schedules. Check their calendars for upcoming performances.

Youth Sports and Activities

The Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission offers youth athletics directly and through partner associations. Current program listings include baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, football, volleyball, lacrosse, wrestling, track, cross country, junior golf, BMX and 7-on-7 football.
